Partnership—Not Perfection
By: Tara Weintritt One of my favorite GCs recently reached out to me about my recent LinkedIn series, #ItsNotASecret, and said he wanted to make sure the positive was being highlighted as much as the need for improvement. What a perfect pivot as we approach Thanksgiving—a beautiful reminder that 95% of what we hear in feedback is incredibly positive and a reinforcement of what clients value, need and cherish. They are grateful for the partnerships, commitment and willingness to help them succeed. It’s worth engaging with them, listening to them and telling them how much you appreciate the partnership.
Quote of the week:
“Outside counsel should take heart. I am grateful for them. They are patient when I am stupid, they spot the holes I do not see, they support me when I am down, they celebrate with me when we win, they are watching my back and they want me to succeed!” -GC, Technology
What it means:
Clients do not expect perfection. They want and value a true partnership. Behind every fast-moving business decision is a client who is juggling competing demands, limited time and high pressure. What they value most is counsel who shows patience, clarity and genuine investment in their success. Gratitude like this is not earned through brilliance alone. It is earned through trust, consistency, empathy and showing up when it matters.
One thing you can do today:
Take a moment to reflect on the clients who rely on you and the ways you help them carry heavy weight. Reach out with a simple note of appreciation or ask one question that deepens the relationship:
- What is one thing I can do that would make your life easier this month?
- What can I take off your plate so you can focus on your highest priorities?
- How can I communicate or deliver work in a way that best supports you right now?
- I wanted to reach out to tell you how much I value and appreciate the work and our partnership.
In a season built around gratitude, this is a reminder that the best client relationships are mutual. Clients notice your support, your patience, your partnership and your commitment to their success. And it matters.
Happy Thanksgiving to those celebrating. I’m grateful for the community we have built and that I get to call what I do “work.”
