Differentiating with Discipline and Value Delivery

At our July Wicker Park Group Client Relationship Symposium, conversations reflected an industry in continued flux. While the subjects discussed were far-reaching—outside investments in firms to AI and more—one theme echoed throughout: Clients are evaluating outside counsel success not just by legal excellence but also by a firm’s ability to deliver measurable business value.

Some of the differentiators that help firms deliver that value are common WPG themes, including a deep understanding of client businesses, proactive outreach, and relationship depth. Others are worth consideration:

  • Client Experience: Successful firms are focusing on the client journey, not just legal outcomes.
  • Client Feedback Cycle: Collecting feedback is no longer enough. Firms are sharing findings broadly, creating action plans, coaching lawyers, tracking progress, and reporting back to clients.
  • Culture of Accountability and Discipline: Excellent firm management requires stronger accountability, better strategic planning, clearer client focus, and improved operational discipline.
  • Data-Driven Decisions: Data is being used to drive decisions and accountability. That may include the sophisticated use of CRM dashboards, client health scores, activity tracking, or opportunity pipelines.
  • Strategic Leadership: Marketing, BD, and other C-Suite professionals are evolving into strategic business leaders that drive client experience, support strategic planning, analyze client data, connect client feedback to firm action, and improve lawyer behavior.

While none of these are simple to implement, they stand out. They start with the client’s voice and amplify that voice to build better business operations and drive change.
